White Haze on Pavers: What It Is, How to Remove It, and Why It Costs More

White haze on pavers isn't dirt and won't pressure wash off. Here's what causes it in Florida, how it's actually removed, and why the price is higher than a plain driveway clean.

You walk out to the driveway after a hard rain and the pavers look like someone dusted them with powdered sugar. A chalky white film sits across the surface — heaviest where water pools, lightest where the sun hits hardest. Scrub it with a hose and it seems to fade. Wait a week and it's back, sometimes worse.

That's not dirt. It's either efflorescence (mineral salts bleeding out of the concrete) or a failed sealer that has turned milky from trapped moisture. Both are common on Lake County paver driveways, pool decks, and patios — and both require a very different process than a normal pressure wash. This guide explains what's actually happening, how it gets removed correctly, and why a legitimate haze-removal quote is two to four times the price of the driveway clean your neighbor just paid for.

What the white haze actually is

Efflorescence is natural mineral salt inside the paver that dissolves in moisture and is carried to the surface, where it dries as a white crust. Blushed sealer is a different problem: moisture trapped under a non-breathable film turns the sealer cloudy. They look similar but need opposite fixes.

How to tell efflorescence from blushed sealer

If the pavers were never sealed, it's almost certainly efflorescence. If they were sealed and the haze appeared after rain or humidity, it's blushed sealer. The right diagnosis determines the entire approach — which is why a pro should inspect before quoting.

Why a regular pressure wash won't fix it

Efflorescence is mineral, not surface grime — a pressure rinse knocks it back for a few days, then it returns as more salt migrates up. Blushed sealer is sealed under a film, so washing the top does nothing. Neither responds to ordinary cleaning.

What it actually takes to remove white haze correctly

Efflorescence requires a specialized acidic cleaner applied and neutralized carefully so the paver isn't etched. Blushed sealer has to be chemically stripped without damaging the paver beneath, then the surface is cleaned, dried, re-sanded and resealed with a breathable product. Both are skilled, multi-step jobs.

Why your quote is higher than your neighbor's

Your neighbor likely paid for a plain driveway clean — a single pressure-wash pass. Haze removal is more product, more labor, more skill and often a reseal, which is why it's priced two to four times higher. You're paying to actually solve the problem, not mask it for a week.

Why the cheap quote is almost always a trap

A bargain 'we'll pressure wash that off' quote means they either don't understand the problem or are hoping you won't notice when it returns. Correct removal isn't something high pressure can do, and the cheap attempt can drive efflorescence deeper or damage the pavers.

How to keep haze from coming back

After correct removal, sealing with a breathable, UV-stable product lets moisture vapor escape so salts and blushing don't reappear. Good drainage and avoiding non-breathable box-store sealers keep the surface clear long-term.
