Pool Screen Enclosure Cleaning: A Florida Homeowner's Guide

Pool cages trap pollen, mildew, and Lovebug residue that pressure washers can't fix without damage. Here's the right way to clean a screen enclosure in Florida.

Pool screen enclosures are one of the best features of a Florida home — and one of the trickiest things to clean. The frame collects mildew. The screens trap pollen, dust, and Lovebug residue. Anything you spray inside the cage drips onto the pool deck. And the entire structure is one ill-aimed pressure wash away from a $500 rescreen bill.

This guide explains what's actually growing on your screen cage, why pressure washing it is a mistake, and the right step-by-step approach to get it clean without damaging anything.

What's actually building up on the cage

Aluminum framing grows a thin film of mildew and oxidation, while the screens accumulate pollen, dust, spider webbing and the greasy residue Lovebugs leave behind. None of it rinses off with plain water once it's set.

Why pressure washing a screen cage goes wrong

Screen mesh and the splines that hold it are delicate. High pressure stretches and tears the screen, pops splines out of their channels, and can bend framing — turning a cleaning into a rescreen bill. Pressure is the wrong tool here.

The right method: low-pressure soft wash

We soft wash the cage: a gentle detergent application breaks down the mildew and organic film on the frame and screens, followed by a low-pressure rinse. The chemistry does the work, so the structure is never stressed and the Lovebug grime that water alone can't touch comes off.

Step-by-step (what to expect on the day of service)

We protect the pool and surrounding plants, apply the cleaning solution to the framing and screens, let it dwell, then rinse at low pressure from the proper angles. Where it makes sense, we clean the pool deck in the same visit so the whole space is refreshed at once.

Frequency and pricing

Most Florida pool cages benefit from cleaning once or twice a year, especially after pollen and Lovebug seasons. Price depends on the size of the enclosure and its condition; we provide a written quote and can bundle it with a deck cleaning.

What you can do between cleanings

A periodic light rinse, keeping leaves and debris off the screens, and trimming back vegetation that touches the cage all slow regrowth and stretch the time between professional cleanings.
